UK engineering hire
Hire AI/ML engineers in the UK — the right first AI hire for scale-ups.
Most UK scale-ups below Series C cannot justify a specialist AI team — they need one versatile engineer who can scope the problem, ship a first model, stand up RAG, and wire evaluation. We source that profile from CEE at 42–53% lower total comp than a London-local senior, with a pre-validated 5-day shortlist and the IR35, UK GDPR, and overlap plumbing already handled.
IR35 safe
Off-payroll working rules don't bite for genuine B2B CEE contractors.
Every engineer we shortlist operates their own registered business in Poland, Ukraine, Romania, or elsewhere in CEE — multiple clients, their own tools, their own hours. HMRC treats this as outside IR35 by default. For inside-IR35 cases we arrange an Employer-of-Record (Remote, Deel, Oyster) in the engineer's home country so your UK entity has zero payroll exposure.
UK GDPR & EU AI Act compliant
Human-in-the-loop by design, not as an afterthought.
Every shortlist is reviewed and signed off by a human recruiter before reaching you. We sign a DPA with every engagement, store candidate data in EU regions by default, notify candidates up-front that AI is used, retain logs for 5 years, and run quarterly bias audits. The EU AI Act postponement to 2027 doesn't change our posture — we built to the standard, not to the deadline.
22% → 15% agency fee
A CEE AI/ML generalist saves you £40–60K a year vs London-local — and a full specialist team vs one generalist hire.
Two savings stack here, not one. First, the role choice: a single AI/ML generalist at a Series A–B scale-up replaces what a larger company would split across an ML platform engineer, an LLM/applications engineer, and an evals lead. For a pre-Series C team shipping one or two AI surfaces, that breadth is the right shape — and it halves your fully-loaded AI team cost vs the three-specialist alternative. Second, the geography: a London-local senior AI/ML generalist costs £95–130K base (Hays UK AI Roles Salary Guide 2026, cross-referenced with IT Jobs Watch London data for March 2026). A CEE-sourced equivalent lands at £52–78K total-comp-equivalent on B2B. Our fee is 15% vs the 22% UK contingency standard — on a £110K UK-local placement that is £7.7K of up-front delta, then £35–50K annually on total comp.
| Seniority | UK local salary | Recruo total comp | Recruo 15% fee | Classical 22% fee | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mid (3–5y) | £70–90K | £40–55K | £6.0–8.3K | £15.4–19.8K | £9–12K |
| Senior (5–8y) | £95–130K | £52–78K | £7.8–11.7K | £20.9–28.6K | £13–17K |
| Staff / Tech Lead (8y+) | £135–165K | £78–102K | £11.7–15.3K | £29.7–36.3K | £18–21K |
Worked example
What a placement actually costs
Worked example, Series A London health-tech (placed 2025-Q3). The founder needed one hire who could (a) productionise a diagnosis-support model, (b) stand up a RAG layer over clinical guidelines, and (c) define an evaluation harness the FDA reviewer would accept. UK-local compensation for that profile would have been £115K base + 15% NI / pension / office overhead = £132K/yr fully loaded. Recruo placed a 7-year CEE AI/ML generalist at €68K/yr on B2B (≈£58K). Recruo fee: 15% of £58K = £8.7K one-time. Classical UK agency alternative: 22% of £115K = £25.3K. Year-1 delta: (£132K + £25.3K) − (£58K + £8.7K) = £90.6K saved. Roughly £74K annually from year 2 onwards. Crucially, the founder did not need a second specialist for RAG or evals — the generalist covered it.
UK-specific hiring context
Why the AI/ML generalist is the right first AI hire for UK scale-ups in 2026
The UK mid-market tells a different story than the US. Series A–B fundraises are smaller (median UK Series B closed at £18M in 2025 per Beauhurst, versus $41M in the US), runway is tighter, and the AI surface a scale-up needs is typically one or two features — a retrieval-backed assistant, a classification or extraction model, a copilot layer over an existing workflow. Staffing that with a three-person specialist team (ML platform, LLM engineer, evals) costs £350K+ fully loaded and is overkill. The generalist profile — 5–8 years across classical ML, modern LLMs, RAG, and evaluation — is the right economic fit. UK founders are disproportionately sensitive to this because the domestic market has more mid-size B2B SaaS companies per capita than most European markets; Tech Nation counted ~9,400 UK SaaS companies at end-2025, many bolting AI onto an existing product rather than building AI-first.
The local supply of this profile is unusually thin. London's AI hiring market bifurcates cleanly: hyperscalers and the biggest UK fintechs absorb specialists at £150K+ base, while most early-career UK engineers skew toward pure LLM application work because that is where bootcamp curricula have been for two years. The 5–8 year engineer who has genuinely shipped classical ML to production AND stood up a modern RAG pipeline is scarce, and their domestic comp has drifted above what a Series A–B UK budget supports. CEE-sourced generalists fill this gap: Ukrainian, Polish, and Romanian engineers typically have longer classical-ML backgrounds (data science and Kaggle cultures ran ahead of the LLM wave there) and have added modern LLM tooling over 2023–2025. Our UK recruitment agency parent page walks through the full CEE-to-UK sourcing pipeline.
Brexit, IR35, and UK GDPR are the three mechanics founders ask about before signing. Post-Brexit Skilled Worker sponsorship takes 8–12 weeks and ~£5K in legal fees — for a single Series A generalist hire this rarely pencils out, so we default to B2B or EOR. A genuine CEE B2B contractor passes HMRC's outside-IR35 tests because the contract sits between your UK entity and their overseas sole-proprietorship with no UK payroll involvement; edge-case risk defaults to EOR. On UK GDPR we sign a DPA citing both UK and EU regimes, collect candidate consent before any AI screening step, and store data in EU (or UK) regions with a 12-month purge. See UK GDPR + EU AI Act checklist.

Visa & work-authorisation patterns
- • Polish, Romanian, Czech, Slovak, Bulgarian, Hungarian engineers: B2B contractor model, no UK visa required. Dominant pattern for Series A–B budgets.
- • Ukrainian engineers: UK Homes for Ukraine scheme (extended through 2027) for those already on UK soil, or home-country B2B with Starlink-backed remote setup for the rest.
- • Full-time UK employment via Employer-of-Record (Remote, Deel, Oyster) at 11–15% overhead — we recommend this only if the first AI hire is intended to become the AI tech lead within 18 months.
- • Skilled Worker visa route adds 8–12 weeks and roughly £5K in legal fees — rarely worth it for a single generalist placement; we advise only for Head of AI hires.
Seniority mix
UK AI/ML generalist placements in 2024–2026 skew senior-mid: 22% mid (3–5y), 58% senior (5–8y), 20% staff/lead. London concentrates senior; Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh, and Cambridge scale-ups take more mid — they want someone who can grow into the tech lead seat.
Remote setup
100% remote-first, UK working hours (9am–6pm BST/GMT). CEE candidates sit in UTC+1/+2, delivering 7–8 hours of daily overlap — functionally identical to a UK-local remote hire. Home-office setup, backup internet, and power redundancy (Starlink for Ukraine-based) are verified at shortlist, not onboarding.
