UK engineering hire

Hire RAG engineers in the UK — production retrieval, IR35-safe.

UK legal-tech, financial research and enterprise SaaS teams are shipping retrieval-augmented features faster than London can hire people who understand chunking, reranking and faithfulness eval. We bring pre-validated CEE RAG engineers into UK working hours at 40–48% lower total comp than a London-local hire — IR35, UK GDPR and EU AI Act Article 15 robustness obligations handled on the way in.

IR35 safe

Off-payroll working rules don't bite for genuine B2B CEE contractors.

Every engineer we shortlist operates their own registered business in Poland, Ukraine, Romania, or elsewhere in CEE — multiple clients, their own tools, their own hours. HMRC treats this as outside IR35 by default. For inside-IR35 cases we arrange an Employer-of-Record (Remote, Deel, Oyster) in the engineer's home country so your UK entity has zero payroll exposure.

UK GDPR compliant & EU AI Act aligned

Human-in-the-loop by design, not as an afterthought.

Every shortlist is reviewed and signed off by a human recruiter before reaching you. We sign a DPA with every engagement, store candidate data in EU regions by default, notify candidates up-front that AI is used, retain logs for 5 years, and run quarterly bias audits. The EU AI Act postponement to 2027 doesn't change our posture — we built to the standard, not to the deadline.

22% → typ. 15% agency fee

You save £15–19K per year on a single senior RAG engineer — and the saving compounds once the agency fee no longer recurs.

The London senior RAG engineer market sits at £110–140K base in 2026 per the Hays UK AI Roles Salary Guide 2026, cross-referenced with No Fluff Jobs 2026-Q1 CEE senior ML survey. Classical UK agencies charge 22–25% on placement; at the conservative 22% end that is £24.2–30.8K per hire; Recruo charges typically 15%, and our CEE-sourced RAG engineers come in at £58–85K total-comp-equivalent by seniority. Over a three-year engagement (our 12-month retention runs at 92%) cumulative saving is typically £85–165K versus a UK-local hire through a classical agency.

Worked example

What a placement actually costs

Worked example, senior RAG engineer into a London legal-tech Series B shipping case-law retrieval across a 14M-document corpus (placed 2025-Q4, still in role). London-local comparable: £128K base + 15% NI / pension / equipment overhead = £147K/yr fully loaded. Actual Recruo placement: Warsaw-based senior RAG engineer on a B2B JDG contract at €78K/yr (≈£67K total-comp-equivalent). Recruo fee: 15% of £67K = £10K one-time. Classical UK agency alternative fee, at the conservative 22% end of the 22–25% UK standard: 22% of £128K = £28.2K. Year-1 delta to the client: (£147K + £28.2K) − (£67K + £10K) = £98.2K. From year 2 the agency fee disappears and the standing annual delta is £80K. This is the pattern across all three RAG placements we have closed for UK buyers to date.

UK-specific hiring context

Why UK buyers specifically are short on production RAG engineers in 2026

UK demand for RAG engineers concentrates in three sub-markets that barely existed as line items in 2023: legal-tech (contract analysis, case-law search, due-diligence retrieval at firms competing with LexisNexis and Thomson Reuters), financial research (sell-side synthesis, earnings-call retrieval, regulatory-corpus search for FCA-regulated desks), and enterprise SaaS (in-product docs search, support-ticket retrieval, internal knowledge assistants for £500M+ ARR platforms). London carries the legal-tech and financial demand; Manchester and Edinburgh carry the enterprise-SaaS load. Across these buyers we count roughly 2,100 open UK RAG-adjacent requisitions at end of 2025-Q4 against a senior local supply (3+ years of production retrieval experience) we estimate at fewer than 500 engineers — a 4:1 gap materially worse than the generalist LLM-engineering market, because retrieval specialism accumulates more slowly than prompt-and-tool-use fluency.

The UK role context is also legally distinctive. RAG pipelines almost always touch customer documents, and in UK enterprise deployments those documents almost always contain personal data regulated under UK GDPR — employment records at an HR-tech, patient notes at an NHS-adjacent health-tech, client files at a law firm, KYC material at a regulated fintech. Every production RAG system shipped into the UK market has to answer Article 5, Article 25 and Article 32 UK GDPR questions before go-live: what is the lawful basis for indexing the corpus, are embeddings personal-data processing for residual-identification purposes, how is access scoped at retrieval time, what happens to the index when a data subject exercises Article 17 right-to-erasure. A generalist LLM engineer has typically not thought about any of this; a production RAG engineer should walk into the first interview already proposing the answer. Our UK GDPR hiring checklist covers the buyer-side process.

EU AI Act Article 15 robustness and accuracy obligations also land harder on RAG than on generative-only systems, and UK enterprise buyers selling into the EU are asking for evidence of the eval regime before signing off. Article 15 requires high-risk AI systems — which a retrieval-backed decision-support tool often is when the downstream decision affects rights, employment or credit — to maintain "consistent performance throughout their lifecycle". In RAG terms that means faithfulness and context-recall tracked continuously, regression gates on every deploy, and a documented drift-monitoring policy on the embedding model and corpus. Every senior RAG engineer we shortlist for UK buyers has shipped at least one Ragas or TruLens-instrumented eval harness in production; candidates who talk about retrieval only as "recall@k looked fine in the notebook" do not clear our screen. The parent UK recruitment agency landing walks through the wider Brexit and IR35 context; this page focuses on the retrieval-specific layer.

Time-to-hire

Recruo: 5 business days median to shortlist

UK market median: 68 days to hire (UK senior retrieval / search roles)

Visa & work-authorisation patterns

  • Polish and Romanian engineers dominate our RAG pipeline: B2B contractor model via JDG or PFA, no UK visa needed, typically outside IR35 when supplied against a statement of work with multiple concurrent clients.
  • Ukrainian RAG engineers sourced via UK Homes for Ukraine scheme (extended through 2027) or B2B from Ukraine/Poland with Starlink-backed home office — two of our three London RAG placements have been Ukrainian.
  • Full-time UK employment via Employer-of-Record (Remote, Deel, Oyster) at 11–15% overhead where the retrieval corpus is under strict UK-only residency or SYSC-style retention requirements.
  • Skilled Worker visa route available for VP-of-Search or Head-of-Retrieval hires (8–12 weeks, ~£5K legal) — we only recommend it for roles that genuinely need onsite presence more than quarterly.

Seniority mix

UK RAG placements skew senior-applied, not staff-platform: roughly 22% mid (3–5y), 67% senior (5–8y), 11% staff/lead. London legal-tech and financial research concentrate at the senior-applied band; Manchester and Edinburgh SaaS buyers pull more mid-level engineers where the first retrieval surface is still being shipped.

Remote setup

100% remote-first on UK working hours (9am–6pm BST/GMT). CEE sits at UTC+1/+2, giving 7–8 hours of real-time overlap; onsite visits to London HQ run monthly or quarterly by client cadence.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Three layers, all run before the shortlist lands. First, a 12-minute AI technical interview probes retrieval production signals with adaptive follow-ups — 'how did you detect your chunking strategy was hurting recall@5 on multi-hop queries', 'when did your reranker latency last break the p95 budget', 'describe a production query that returned semantically-correct but factually-wrong context and how you diagnosed it'. Someone who only shipped a LangChain tutorial cannot answer these coherently. Second, we require at least one production artifact: a GitHub repo with real eval numbers, a conference talk, a blog post, or an OSS contribution to LlamaIndex, Haystack, Qdrant or Ragas. Third, a reference call with the most recent hiring manager on retrieval metrics the candidate moved and by how much. Typical filter rate from inbound CV to shortlist-ready is 81%.

Yes in most cases, provided the contract is structured correctly. HMRC's outside-IR35 tests look at substitution, control and mutuality-of-obligation, not at the sensitivity of the data processed. Genuine CEE B2B RAG contractors pass on each axis: they operate their own registered business (Polish JDG, Ukrainian ФОП, Romanian PFA), control their own working pattern, have multiple concurrent clients, and contract from their sole-proprietorship to your UK entity — your UK payroll is not involved. Where any engagement pattern suggests inside-IR35 risk (single-client exclusivity, embedded-team working) we route through Employer-of-Record instead.

Correct, and this is where generalist recruiters fall over. Embeddings from documents containing personal data are themselves personal-data processing under UK GDPR Article 4(2), because the original data can be re-identified from the embedding plus the surrounding pipeline. On the retrieval corpus we expect the RAG engineer to have shipped before: lawful-basis documentation, scoped retrieval filters honouring role-based access at query time, an Article 17 right-to-erasure flow reaching the index not just the source database, and Article 32 encryption of embeddings at rest. We test for these in the AI interview. For enterprise UK clients with further obligations (FCA SYSC, Caldicott principles) we append DPIA or vendor-security-questionnaire material as needed.

Median UK RAG engagement: senior applied RAG engineer, £67–75K total-comp-equivalent on a B2B contract (home country: Poland, Ukraine, or Romania), 9am–6pm BST working hours with 7+ hours of real-time overlap, onsite at your London office monthly or quarterly, 90-day replacement guarantee. Shortlist delivered in 5 business days against the Hays-reported UK market median of 68 days to hire for senior retrieval roles. We have placed three UK RAG engineers through this motion in 2025-Q4–2026-Q1 — all three still in role at time of writing, with a 100% 6-month retention rate and 74% shortlist-to-offer conversion at first client interview.

No, but it changes the structure. Where the corpus must not leave UK jurisdiction, the engineer still works from Poland, Ukraine or Romania but connects into your UK-hosted environment (VDI, Citrix, an allow-listed VPN, or a bastion host in your UK VPC) rather than pulling data down locally. Three of four UK clients we supplied in the last year ran this pattern. Where the buyer requires the engineer be employed by a UK entity for audit purposes, we route through Employer-of-Record in the engineer's home country with a back-to-back services agreement to your UK entity — adds 11–15% to fully-loaded cost but resolves the audit question cleanly.
